I was helping a friend choose a pair of sunglasses for her holiday to Barcelona this week and only after, we hit the second aisle and after watching hoards of people snatching at glasses and stealing the mirrors did it occur to me that the majority of people don’t know how to shop for their face shape.
I’m hardly an expert and I too try, try, and try again until I think “Ooh, they don’t look too bad.” So I thought, seeing as summer is almost upon us, although it’s taking its sweet time, that I’d share some tips about choosing the right sunglasses for your face shape.
Heart Shaped Face
Heart shaped faces, such as the perfectly pouty Scarlett Johansson, need to draw attention to the lower half of their face to add width. Bigger styles will work best, but remember to avoid anything that sits too high and wide as this will make the upper part of your face, which is the widest part, appear even wider!
Top tip: Round edges are great for heart shaped faces as they soften the broad, upper part of your face.
Square Shaped Face
Square faces like that of the beautiful Jessica Simpson usually have strong features, so the key is not to wear hard, angular styles that will accentuate them.
Top tip: Oval or round frames will help to soften those fierce features of yours.
Round Face Shape
Round faces like bohemian chick Kate Bosworth have fuller cheeks so it’s key to pick a pair of shades that make your face appear longer and thinner. Angular frames with flat, horizontal tops add extra length and will help sharpen the face’s features.
Top tip: Choosing sunglasses where the arm connects at the top of the frame, like many Ray-bans, will immediately draw attention to the top of your face giving it extra length.
Oval Face Shape
If, like girl next door Jennifer Aniston, you have an oval face, then you’re incredibly lucky. You enviable gals have ultra balanced proportions that will suit the majority of frames! Take advantage of your face shape and play with all kinds of styles, from oversized and square to round and cat-eyes, you can have your pick.
